After the Kosovo War (1998-1999), the rapid physical expansion of Prishtina had massive negative impacts on the city’s public life. It brought up concentrated and congested public uses around the central Boulevard, congestion from the cars in the city’s streets, inadequate infrastructure for pedestrians and bikers, the devastation of architectural heritage, informal areas of commercial or living functions, the lack of green areas, and a confusing city image. This thesis aims to lengthen the central axis north and help start a distribution process of public activities throughout the city by using the site of the former Brick Factory, located 2,5 km north from the city center in the “Kodra e Trimave” neighborhood, to fit public uses. The research uses video- and photo-walks to record and observe the current situation and the ways people use and perceive the factory site and the neighborhood. The research focuses on Prishtina’s contemporary art scene to find out the missing links of public infrastructure that support the contemporary art medium. Finally, the project introduces public green and educational spaces to allow the ensemble to breathe and connect to the neighborhood and the larger city of Prishtina. The design aims for minimal architectural interventions, authentic materials, and the appreciation of industrial heritage. This thesis highlights the excellent potential for inactive industrial structures with unresolved ownership for the city’s public life and insists that cities need to obtain legal competencies over these properties. Public functions related to art and greenery are effective activators of public spaces, fit beautifully into the industrial heritage sites, generate better urban conditions for the neighborhoods, and have a massive positive impact on the city’s public life.
